Im Zentrum der Ausstellung steht die 6-Kanal-Audio-Installation Concrete Matters, in der der Künstler eine Reihe von in Beton gegossenen Flöten als Instrumente einsetzt. Anhand der während einer Künstlerresidenz in Japan und in Zusammenarbeit mit einem dort ansäßigen, international agierenden Betonhersteller entstandenen Flöten und weiteren Arbeiten, die in der Ausstellung zu sehen sind, untersucht Grossmann die Wechselbeziehungen zwischen konkreten (greifbaren) und nicht-körperlichen Materialien. Dabei hinterfragt er die intrinsischen Werte kultureller Aktivitäten in Bezug zu unternehmerischen, industriellen und institutionellen.
Julien Grossmann (b. 1983 in Metz, France, lives in Rotterdam, the Netherlands) studied classical music at the National Music Conservatory of Metz and holds a M.A. from the Dutch Art Institute, the Netherlands. His work has been exhibited, among other, at TENT, Rotterdam (NL); AIAV, Yamaguchi (JP); 11th Dakar Biennale, Senegal; ZKM, Karlsruhe (DE); MUDAM, Museum of Modern Art of Luxembourg; Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, and Stella Art Foundation, Moscow.
Travelling without moving
Across a transversal practice, Julien Grossmann explores different facets of globalisation, addressing certain paradoxes that come along with the entanglement of cultural, technological and economic movements. He looks at areas of overlap or friction between particular cultural dynamics with normative structures and systems derived from global exchanges and trade. With a keen interest in music and the use of sound within a range of historical and contemporary contexts where it contributed to shaping social relations, his work consists primarily of sound installations, but encompasses a diversity of medium such as photographic or digital prints, video, and publications, trying to regenerate perspectives and relationships.
The exhibition Travelling Without Moving at Galerie Ursula Walter gathers several works which explore the interrelations between tangible and intangible materials, questioning the intrinsic values of cultural activities in regards to corporate, industrial and institutional ones. Central to the exhibition is the musical installation Concrete Matters, for which the artist has realised a series of flutes cast in concrete, which he uses as instruments to give perspective to their constitutive material. A 6-channels audio-piece inhabits the exhibition space, as an alchemical soundtrack to the sourcing and transformation of the limestone into musical instruments.
