The Whiter Distance
Ausgangspunkt der gemeinsamen Ausstellung der Koreanischen Künstlerin Heaven Baek und des Dresdener Künstlers Daniel Rode ist Hanoi im Jahr 2017. Beide waren dort zu Gast beim Month of Art Practice (MAP), einem internationalen Ausstellungsprojekt des Heritage Space Hanoi.
Im Jahr 2021 folgen beide Künstler einer erneuten Einladung zum MAP 2021, zu einer hybriden und dezentralen Ausstellung und beteiligen sich mit Flaggen im öffentlichen Raum in Dresden (am Goethe-Institut), in Seoul (am MMCA, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea, Changdong Space) und in Hanoi (zentrale Ausstellung Heritage Space). MAP 2021 steht unter dem Titel The White Distance.

Zu diesem Zeitpunkt planen beide bereits Ausstellungen in Seoul und in Dresden. Diese werden den Titel The Whiter Distance haben. Zum einen existiert damit eine Referenz nach Hanoi, wo alles begann. Zum anderen überzeugte die Künstler beim Titel seine Offen- und Unbestimmtheit, sein großer Interpretationsspielraum, der ins Leere laufende Vergleich durch die Steigerungsform „whiter“. Der Titel ist damit willentlich schwer zu fassen.
Die Künstler nähern sich unabhängig voneinander dem gemeinsamen Projekt. Es gibt kaum konzeptionelle oder kuratorische Absprachen. Sehr früh einig aber sind sich beide, dass sich die Distanz, die sich im Titel findet, im Ausstellungsraum in einem Gefühl der Leere ganz konkret zeigen soll, dass es Ausstellungen mit relativ wenigen Werken sein werden.
Es gibt während der Vorbereitung kaum präzise Absprachen zwischen Heaven Baek und Daniel Rode. Beide tauschen sich aber regelmäßig darüber aus, woran gerade für The Whiter Distance gearbeitet und gedacht wird. Umso erstaunlicher ist es nun zu sehen, wie sehr sich die Positionen aufeinander beziehen und die künstlerischen Arbeiten ineinander greifen.
Die Ausstellung war bereits im September in Seoul bei d/p zu sehen.
Heaven Baek hat in Melbourne (BFA, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) und Glasgow (MFA, Glasgow School of Art) studiert. Projekte, Ausstellungen und Residenzen führten sie nach Island, Japan, Spanien, Dubai und 2019 auch nach Frankfurt/Main, um nur einige zu nennen.
Ihre Arbeiten sind unter anderem in den Sammlungen des Seoul Museum of Art und des Museum of Contemporary Art Busan vertreten.
Die Künstlerin lebt und arbeitet in Seoul und Regensburg und wird zur Eröffnung in Dresden sein.
Daniel Rode hat in Greifswald und Dresden studiert. Auch er ist viel gereist und hat einige Jahre in Kairo gelebt und gearbeitet. Ende letzten Jahres konnte er in Zusammenarbeit mit den Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden eine temporäre Installation an der Fassade des neu entstehenden Archivs der Avantgarden verwirklichen. Im Frühjahr 2022 ist ein umfassender monografischer Katalog bei Hatje Cantz erscheinen.

The Whiter Distance
The starting point for the joint exhibition of Heaven Baek (Seoul, Korea) and Daniel Rode (Dresden, Germany) was Hanoi in 2017, for invited guests at the Month of Art Practice (MAP), an international exhibition project of Heritage Space Hanoi.
In 2021, MAP initiated a hybrid and decentralized exhibition, Baek and Rode cooperatively participated the exhibition with a project called Flags Fly, flags in public spaces in Dresden (at Goethe Institute), in Seoul (at the MMCA, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea, Changdong Space), and in Hanoi (central exhibition Heritage Space). MAP 2021 was entitled The White Distance.

At this time, Baek and Rode already planned to have joint exhibitions in Seoul and Dresden. These will have the title as The Whiter Distance which has a reference to Hanoi, where it all began. Hence the artists were convinced by the title's openness and indeterminacy, its wide scope for interpretation, and the comparison that runs into the void through the comparative degree „whiter“. The title is thus difficult to grasp at will.
The artists approach the joint project independently. There is hardly any conceptual or curatorial agreement. Very early on, however, they both agree that the distance found in the title should show itself quite concretely in the exhibition space in a feeling of emptiness, that these will be exhibitions with relatively few works.
There are few precise agreements between Heaven Baek and Daniel Rode during the preparation. However, they regularly exchange information about what is being worked on and thought about for The Whiter Distance. It is all the more astonishing now to see how much both positions relate to each other and how the artistic works intertwine.
The exhibition was already on view in September in Seoul at d/p.

Her work is represented in the collections of the Seoul Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan, among others.
The artist lives and works in Seoul and Regensburg and will be in Dresden for the opening.
Daniel Rode studied in Greifswald and Dresden. He has also traveled extensively and lived and worked in Cairo for several years. At the end of last year, in collaboration with the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, he was able to realize a temporary installation on the façade of the newly emerging Archive der Avantgarden. A comprehensive monographic catalog has been published by Hatje Cantz in spring 2022.
